Why Birthdays are Special
Birthdays are a special time of year. They remind us that we’re growing older, but they also symbolize how far we’ve come. They’re a cause for celebration and a great excuse to show someone how much you appreciate them. When we celebrate someone’s birthday we’re not only celebrating the length of their life, but we celebrate how much they’ve grown in the past year.
Birthdays are important because they give everyone a day to feel special and see how much those around them love them.
Many cultures say that your birthday is more than just a special day of the year. Horoscopes are based on the position of the stars and planets at your time of birth and many people believe that your horoscope can tell you a great deal about your personality and fate. Based on your birth year you are also assigned an animal from the Chinese zodiac, a lunar calendar.
Many cultures celebrate birthdays with fun traditions that help bind families and cultures together as everyone participates in the festivities. In the United States it’s appropriate to wish someone a happy birthday by sending them a text, calling them, sending a card by mail, or giving them a gift.
How to Remember Birthdays
It can be difficult to remember every birthday. Social media platforms like Facebook have made it a little easier with their notifications.
However, you might not want to have to check Facebook everyday know which friends are having birthdays and you’ll probably want to do more for your friend than write a generic “Happy Birthday” on their Facebook wall. Facebook doesn’t give you enough time to send a card, get a gift or plan an outing with that special person. Learn how to download birthdays from Facebook here.
Some other ways to remember birthdays include:
Write the birthdays of your friends and family on a calendar and keep this calendar from year to year.
This perpetual calendar will help you keep all your birthdays in one place. You can buy wall calendars for less than $10 at most grocery or office supply stores. If you want to save money, try to buy a calendar from the previous year or buy this year’s calendar in the last few months of the year and these calendars will be highly discounted.
You can also print off generic calendars from the internet and save yourself a trip to the store. However, if you don’t keep the calendar out where you will see it often it will be easy to forget an important birthday or not be reminded of a birthday with enough time in advance to buy a gift or prepare.
If you don’t want a paper calendar, some home stores sell birthday calendars that you can hang on your wall as decoration.
Keep a birthday notebook.
This method is similar to the perpetual calendar method described above. The difference is that instead of displaying this calendar on the wall, you can write the birthdays in a notebook and carry the notebook with you or keep it somewhere accessible.
Similar to the calendar option, birthdays kept in a notebook might pass without you noticing if you don’t check your notebook often.
Add birthdays to a digital calendar.
Adding birthdays to a digital calendar like Google Calendar (compatible with Gmail and Android) or your iPhone’s calendar is a sure way to remember birthdays that are coming up.
With these digital calendars you can receive notifications of the birthday event the day of. However, some drawbacks to using digital calendars is that if you want to keep track of a lot of birthdays, this might crowd your calendar and make it difficult to visualize the other personal events you keep track of on your calendar.
Depending on which digital calendar you pick, you might also have limited options about what kind of notifications you receive and how far in advance those notifications are.
Use an app to remember birthdays.
The advantage of using an app to remember birthdays as opposed to using something like Google Calendar is that you can personalize your notifications, plan gifts, and keep your personal calendar as clean as possible. One free app to remember birthdays is called ZooWho.
